- FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Some Alaskans are weighing less. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports a new study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show rates of obesity for children in the Anchorage and Matanuska-Susitna Borough areas have decreased slightly. The data is from an analysis of height and weight measurements from the 2003-04 school year and the 2010-11 school year. It compared height and weight measurements of the children attending kindergarten, first, third, fifth and seventh grades in public schools. The study says despite the overall decline in obesity rates, those rates did not decline for Alaska Native and American Indian children and students from families that had a lower socio-economic status.
