Anchorage performance group suspends operations

Jul 30, 2013 -- 12:35pm
- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Out North, the performing arts organization in Anchorage, has closed its doors after nearly 30 years of serving as a launching pad for aspiring artists. It closed Monday after its board of directors laid off four full-time and two part-time employees. Board president Chrissy Bell says the decision to suspend operations temporarily was made last week after the board met with nonprofit professionals to assess the situation. Out North won a $250,000 grant from Chicago-based ArtPlace America that lasted from June 2012 to May. Bell says Out North doesn't have future sustainability in place. Still to be determined are the possibility of reopening Out North in the future and how to accommodate independent users of the gallery.
