Juneau teacher to be 'ambassador' for US education

Aug 07, 2013 -- 10:00am
- JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A fourth grade teacher at Harborview Elementary School in Juneau will be one of eight teacher ambassadors for the U.S. Department of Education during the upcoming school year. Tom McKenna has been chosen to spend part of the 2013-14 school year making sure the voices of classroom teachers are heard when education policy is made. This is the sixth year of the program. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan says the teacher ambassadors help policymakers understand their needs as well as their hopes for their students. The teacher ambassadors are also charged with bringing their increased knowledge about federal policy back to their fellow teachers. The ambassadors are currently in Washington, D.C., becoming more familiar with the department and beginning their work.
