NOAA investigates shooting death of harbor seal

- KODIAK, Alaska (AP) - Federal officials are investigating the shooting death of a 300-pound female harbor seal that washed up on a Kodiak Island beach. KMXT reports the seal was shot in the head. NOAA Fisheries investigator Michael Killary says they are trying to determine if the shooting was a failed subsistence harvest effort or a malicious act. Killary says about three marine mammals are illegally killed annually in Kodiak Island waters. He believes this one was shot around the Labor Day weekend, and it washed up on Pasagshak Beach late last week. He asks anyone with information about the shooting to call him at 907-486-3298. Calls can be anonymous.
