Bear dies after being hit by pickup in Anchorage

Nov 08, 2013 -- 4:00pm
- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Anchorage police say a brown bear was killed after it was hit by a pickup. Police say a pickup hit the in south Anchorage Friday morning. The Anchorage Daily News reports it's the eighth bear to be killed by vehicles this year. State biologist Jessy Coltrane says that's an unusually high number. Last year, only two brown bears and one black bear were killed. She says the number of bear deaths in collisions is usually less than five. Coltrane doesn't know why there's been more this year, but says the number of bears killed in defense of life and property incidents is low. So far this year, seven bears have been killed, down from the 18 killed in defense of life or property last year.
