Dying man gets 5 years for abuse conviction

- JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A 67-year-old man will serve five years in prison for the attempted sexual abuse of a child in Juneau and Ketchikan. Judge Louis Menendez sentenced John W. Strickling on Tuesday in Juneau following a guilty plea in August. Prosecutors say Strickling abused a child under 13 from 2002 to 2009. He was indicted in 2012 and arrested in Nome. Defense attorneys argued for a two-year minimum sentence. With time off for good behavior and time served, Strickling would have been out of jail within months. The Juneau Empire reports family members pleaded for the lighter sentence because Strickling is dying from chronic heart and lung problems and they want him to live out his life with them. The defense also argued he is physically incapable of re-offending.
