Grand jury indicts driver in injury crash

- JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A Juneau grand jury has indicted a 23-year-old man on felony assault charges stemming from a car crash nearly a year ago. The Juneau Empire reports Silver Maake was indicted Friday on first- and third-degree assault counts. Police last year said Maake on Jan. 16 was behind the wheel of a car that crashed in the Mendenhall Valley near a McDonald's restaurant. The car left the roadway, struck a light pole and stopped against an Egan Drive pedestrian bridge. Emergency officials used a Jaws of Life tool to extract Maake and a passenger, who was flown to Seattle for treatment. Assistant district attorney Amy Williams says the 24-year-old passenger remains in Seattle receiving treatment. Maake is scheduled for arraignment next week.
