House committee advances $9.1B operating budget

- JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The House Finance Committee has advanced a $9.1 billion state operating budget. The final version of the bill is about $1.6 million less than what the committee proposed last week. Much of the difference was because of a reduction of about $2.3 million for school construction and debt service. Overall, the package is about $1.3 billion less than the level of authorized spending at the start of the current year. It is about $43 million less in unrestricted general funds than what Gov. Sean Parnell proposed. Lawmakers haven't decided whether to provide a cash infusion to address the state's roughly $12 billion unfunded pension liability or to continue the current payment schedule. The bill was scheduled for a House vote this week. It still must be considered by the Senate.
