- JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A tourist with a sharp eye led to the rescue of a man who overturned his kayak, which was taking on water and sinking in Mendenhall Lake. The Juneau Empire reports a tourist looking through a telescope in the observatory room of the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center was scanning the lake when he saw the man flip over in his kayak. The tourist, who hasn't been identified, alerted officials, who called 911. Capital City Fire and Rescue was able to reach Robert Eison Sharclane just as he says he began to black out from hypothermia in the middle of the lake. He had been kayaking with his 7-year-old son. He tells the Empire that before his rescue, he was forming what his last words would be to his son.
