New Year's fireworks in Anchorage will be illegal

Dec 05, 2012 -- 10:38am

- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - It won't be legal to set off fireworks this New Year's in Anchorage. The Anchorage Daily News reports that Anchorage Assemblyman Dick Traini had an ordinance ready to be introduced to Tuesday's Assembly meeting, but changed his mind. The ordinance would have made it legal for people to set off fireworks without a permit on New Year's Eve. It was scheduled for a public hearing on Dec. 18. But now that it is not going forward, personal fireworks in the municipality will be against the law. The Assembly passed a law in 2010 to allow fireworks, but it expires this week. For the past two years, residents have lined up on both sides of the issue; some for fireworks, others against.
