- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Hundreds of people gathered at the Anchorage Assembly meeting to protest proposed changes in labor laws affecting municipal employees. The Anchorage Daily News says more than 750 people showed up for the meeting Tuesday night in which the Assembly voted 7-4 to allow a public hearing on the proposal. The plan is being put forth by Mayor Dan Sullivan, and Assembly members Ernie Hall and Jennifer Johnston. If passed, the proposal would limit raises, eliminate the right to strike and would give the Assembly the final work on labor disputes. Police officers, firefighters and engineers swamped the Assembly meeting room. Rod Harris, president of the Anchorage firefighters union, says people are worried that the proposed rewrite of the city's labor laws threatens their livelihoods.
