Mar 27, 2013 -- 9:40am

- ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - U.S. Sen. Mark Begich will conduct a hearing on the 2012 Arctic offshore petroleum drilling season and maritime safety in the region. The Alaska Democrat is chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard. The hearing begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Royal Dutch Shell PLC drilled last year in both the Beaufort and Chukchi seas but experienced operating problems, including a drill vessel that ran aground on New Year's Eve. Begich has invited seven speakers, including Tommy Beaudreau, the Department of Interior acting assistant secretary for land and minerals management, who will speak by video teleconference. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Thomas Ostebo and Shell Alaska Vice President Pete Slaiby are scheduled to speak.
