The state Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals will investigate whether Anchorage police were justified in shooting and killing a man in a grocery store parking lot. Anchorage police have released few details regarding the death Friday night of 27-year-old Detlef Wulf outside a Carrs/Safeway store on Gambell Street, a major south-bound thoroughfare. Police Chief Mark Mew told the Anchorage Daily News that a store security guard called police just after 10 p.m. to report a possibly drunk man slumped over the wheel of a sport utility vehicle. Officers investigated and called a dispatcher to report they were dealing with an emergency and needed assistance. Mew says shots were fired and a third officer showed up just after the shooting. Wulf died in the parking lot.
