Sentencing begins for former gang members

A judge has sentenced one suspect in a 2006 home invasion case. 18-year-old Mike Manufekai is one of seven men accused of invading a residence on New Year's Eve. Police officials say the men had ties to a local gang, and ransacked a home and assaulted its occupants while shouting the gang's name. Manufekai said in an Anchorage courtroom yesterday that he understands what he did was wrong.

"When this event happened I was 16 years old. Yes I was immature, still in school and I understand that I was hanging around with the wrong crowd," Manufekai said.

All seven men ranged in age from 15 to 19-years-old at the time of the invasion, and all but one will be tried as an adult. Prosecutor Adrienne Bachman says Manufekai can learn from this mistake.

"Now as an adult, he has this terrible detriment to his future life -- which is that he is a felon on this charge. But, he has the keys to the jail and the keys to his future still with him," Bachman said.

Manufekai was sentenced to four years in jail with four years suspended and three years probation. He was convicted for charges of assault and theft.
