State triggers emergency center for flooding

The Division of Homeland Security has activated the State Emergency Coordination Center in response to the flooding in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. The National Weather Service issued a flood warning that will remain in effect until Thursday afternoon for the Tanana River from Delta Junction to Nenana. Flooding has also been reported along the Chena River. The Army Corps of Engineers planned this afternoon on lowering the gates on the Chena Flood Control Project to restrict the flow of the river. The Red Cross has opened an evacuation shelter for residents displaced due to the flooding in the Salcha area. At least 44 people have voluntary evacuated, and six were at the shelter as of this morning. The Fairbanks North Star Borough activated an Emergency Operation Center to assist residents with evacuation and to coordinate protective measures. Several roadway in the Fairbanks North Star Borough have experienced flooding and/or mudslides.
