About 30 Alaska communities affected by spring flooding so far

State officials say about 30 Alaska communities have been impacted by flooding so far this spring, with the situation the worst on the Yukon River. Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, says there is some good news. As of yesterday afternoon, the National Weather Service had issued no new flood warnings and those for Ruby and Tanana had been canceled. Zidek says a team was in Anvik and Russian Mission to assess the situation there. Sheet ice was found in Russian Mission and it wasn't moving. Sheet ice is the type associated with ice jams. While the Yukon River community of Eagle has been the most affected by flooding, Zidek says there are many other towns and villages that are going to need help in coming weeks and months.
