Third man pleads guilty in Alaska caribou wasting

A third man accused of killing and wasting dozens of caribou on the tundra near Point Hope last year has pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to salvage edible meat. Officials said 26-year-old Lazarus Killigvuk, who entered the plea Wednesday, will be sentenced in February along with 27-year-old Randy Oktollik and 21-year-old Brett Oktollik who pleaded guilty to the same charge last week. The plea deals call for fines and community service but no jail time. The men must also pay $1,360 in fines and restitution. Five other men have pleaded not guilty. Their trial was set for February. The men were from two hunting parties charged with wanton waste and failing to salvage meat after Alaska Wildlife Troopers responded to a tip and found at least 37 caribou wasted.
