Senate takes up bill defining governor's duty station

The state Senate voted Wednesday to pass a measure making clear the governor's place is in Juneau. But the measure is being held, for reconsideration, at the request of Democratic state Sen. Donny Olson of Golovin. The bill designates the capital as a governor's "duty station." Sitka Republican and bill sponsor Sen. Bert Stedman says nothing in current law requires governors to live in Juneau, in the governor's mansion, during their terms. He says the measure would not limit a governor's travel schedule. It also wouldn't preclude a governor from staying in a personal residence in another city. But the governor wouldn't be allowed to claim a lodging allowance while doing so. While governor, Sarah Palin did much of her work at her Anchorage office while maintaining a home in Wasilla.
