ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Native leader and former state lawmaker John Sackett has died. He was 76. Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy has ordered U.S. flags and Alaska state flags to fly at half-staff on Monday in tribute. Sackett’s cause of death was not immediately released. A profile by the University of Alaska Fairbanks said Sackett began his political career in 1967 in the state House of Representatives. Sackett then spent 14 years in the state Senate and served as chair of the Senate Finance Committee. Anchorage Daily News reported that Sam Kito, former president of the Alaska Federation of Natives, said on Friday that Sackett also helped establish Doyon Ltd., the Alaska Native regional corporation.
