Avalanche center warns of high danger in Chugach forest

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center is warning of high avalanche danger in the mountains of the Chugach National Forest. KTUU-television reports the danger is high from Hatcher Pass to Seward. Avalanche specialist Aleph Johnston-Bloom says that means natural avalanches are likely and human-triggered avalanches are very likely. She recommends staying out of the mountains and away from avalanche terrain until the danger subsides. Cold and clear weather in January formed a persistent layer of weak snow. Johnston-Bloom says new snow on top of the weak layer may tempt skiers but conditions remain dangerous.
